Review by Trick Slattery on the short story 'The Day I Met A Demon':

I would like to recommend Aidan to any indie writer looking to have a second set of eyes on their written word before they send it out into the world. Not only did I accept almost all of the changes he recommended for my short story, but he conducted himself with professionalism and has excellent rates to boot. He definitely caught things I would have never caught no matter how many times I self edited the short fiction.

Aidan does not try to overpower the writers own voice with his own. He simply allows the writing to flow better in the mind of the reader, and corrects grammar and spelling errors that are not easily found. He seems very skilled at noticing those things the writer may overlook. For the indie writer this is usually all that is needed.

He has also taught me something about my own writing that I did not notice before. I had been taught to break up longer sentences into shorter ones, but I had not realized I was doing this a bit too much - even with not-so-long sentences. I was in fact breaking the flow of the writing. As I read Aidan's edits in which he reconnected many of the sentences, I realized that they really do flow much better that way. He was careful to only connect those sentences that relate and which didn't need to be separated out to begin with.

I also realize that I must have something against question marks, because I left out quite a number of them where they apply. Why I used periods instead I have no idea. He also suggested I use single quotes within narrative or thought instead of double quote, and suggested italics for internal dialogue. This works so much better than what I had which somewhat conflated internal dialogue with narrative, especially since the short story was in first person.

There were a few other things he caught such as were I mixed up tense or left out a comma here and there. As a philosopher who is looking to propagate concepts and ideas to the layperson through both nonfiction and creative fiction, I will certainly consider Aidan again. The second set of eyes he offers is of great value.

Aidan purports himself as a skilled "non-professional" (which is quite humble) meaning he does not have some of the academic credentials (ie. A PHD in English Composition) that some editors might have. I have always been of mind that true expertise comes from passion and drive to learn over academic credentials and Aidan is a prime example of this. I am certain that as he continues along this path helping indie writers that he will progress even farther and have a long and fruitful career ahead of him.

Thank you Aidan for your excellent service.

  1. Aiden was thorough and fast. His comment about my writing style made me change things up a bit for the better- always a plus. I will use him again, and probably for more than just proofreading. Thanks again. Dee Ernst

  3. I definitely recommend Aidan as a proofreader. It’s clear that he has a keen eye for identifying issues at the proofing level no matter how subtle. He’s also quite flexible and understanding regarding conventions and style, which made his corrections/suggestions more appropriate. Just sent him one to edit! Thanks, Aidan …
